My dd (20 months) is having terrible tantrums. They generally last 20-40 minutes with screaming and crying, knocking over furniture, kicking, etc. Nothing seems to help calm her down. When it's over, she just stops like nothing happened. It's like she completely checks out for half an hour. Does anyone else have experience with this? Any advice? ideas?

What sets her off? Can you see them coming? Or anticipate one reliably?

Most of the time, I can't really figure out anything that sets her off. A few times, it's started when I was changing her diaper. She signed "Movie, George, Hat, Please" (she wanted to watch Curious George). I told her "Yes, you can watch George when we finish with your diaper" and then she flipped out.
They happen all different times of the day, before/after eating, when she's tired/well rested. When she isn't upset, she is very engaging, sweet, and polite.
